There are a lot of different ways to make Obi Belts. I'm going to show you a simple way to make a contoured belt to wear with your outfits. It only takes two ties and a few minutes to put together. I love belts and think they can be an integral part of a wardrobe. I use larger ones to accentuate my waist and have fun ones with zebra accents and red as well.
Today obi belts as just as subtly sexy and an ideal way to shape your silhouette. You don’t want a cross-body bag cutting off your obi at an awkward angle or a shoulder bag, causing the fabric to bunch under your arm. Carry a bag from the crook of your arm . This way, you stow your essentials, but your bag won’t interfere with your outfit’s silhouette- which an obi belt highlights.

DIY OBI Belt
It’s basically a wrap style belt that majorly cinches your waist and creates that coveted hourglass silhouette. Obis allow you to play with volume, so wear one over a flowing shirtdress for the day or a drapey Grecian-inspired number for the evening. In this sewing tutorial, I’m going to show you how to make an obi-style belt. Obi belts come from Japan and are typically worn wrapped around a kimono. Unlike your standard buckle belts, obi belts are done up by tying a bow with the material. My favorite way to wear an obi belt is over dresses and sweaters.
As the belt is black, it is very versatile, and you can style it with many different tops and dresses. I’ve styled mine against this bright, colorful dress, and I love the definition it adds to my waistline. I have a shirt dress that has an obi belt. I like to see more realistic models and fashion suggestions for those of us who do not have perfect youthful figures. I usually just wrap my belt and tie it into a half bow.

Every fall I find myself pulling out my leather obi belt. Since then, I’ve worn it with everything from cocktail dresses to sweaters and leather leggings. It’s an accessory that was inspired by traditional Japanese clothing and martial art uniforms.
Pin the two straps together, sew along the top and bottom but leave the short sides open for turning the piece inside out. Next, angle out one side of both of the straps by cutting them in a slanted way. Now you have four strap pieces that you need to sew together to make two long pieces. Pin and cut out two pieces of the measurements you just marked for the front and the back.
Measure and cut the short straps
The author may collect a small share of sales from the links on this page. Measure out four straps for tying in the front. The measurement is the waist measurement plus 5inches (12.7cm) plus a ½ inch (1.3cm) seam allowance. Next, shape the belt on the sides by cutting out a little bit of fabric in a triangle form.
But if you want to be creative, I found a cute video on four different ways to tie a wrap belt. Place one tie over the other and and match those pin marking to the triangular edge, and the side with the tie point. I didn't want the ties to be put together straight across, I wanted to contour them a bit to fit my waist better. So once I got the edges pinned in place evenly on either side, I pulled the center a bit to make the belt slightly curved.
I agree these need to go around the waist and not the hip area. I like thinner ones to wear with jeans or around a looser dress to show a waist and/or get a pop of color in an otherwise neutral outfit. NONE of us need THAT, even when you’re too skinny like me. We don’t WANT or NEED to add UNNECESSARY bulk.
Not quite sure whether this should go on my embroidery board or here! Not precisely my style, but it does give me ideas. Then place the pieces one on top of the other with the right sides facing and sew the top and the bottom sides with a straight stitch. Next, iron interfacing to one side of the wide section only because we don’t want it to be too thick.
Sisley red plaid dress with black leather obi belt. If you want to look fabulous in an obi belt, it’s important to give it the spotlight. This means no busy prints, big accessories, or super-loud colors in the rest of your outfit. By letting your belt be your statement piece, you achieve a pulled-together, chic look with an artsy edge.
